mystical pictures spiritual images

"When I am finishing a picture, I hold some God-made object up to it - a rock, a flower, the branch of a tree or my hand - as a final test.
If the painting stands up beside a thing man cannot make, the painting is authentic. If there's a clash between the two, it's bad art."
- Marc Chagall

All the modern pictures above, with the exception of "To the Magic Mountain", have been exclusively produced using pencils and no other medium. I have found pencils to be just about the only medium whereby I have almost total control in whatever detail work I desire to work on.

Precise and intricate lines of varying shades can be easily made. And what other medium is there whereby I can then apply something like a tortillion (a simple paper-made pointed blending tool) to produce the subtlest and most delicate gradients in tonal value.

I also like the fact that a heavily drawn line or area can not only be of the deeper shades of black ... but can also bear a beautiful sheen, almost metalic, which adds such a wonderful enigmatic solidity to a work.

Of course, I have not only used graphite pencils. I have found that some of the waterbased colour pencils to be very useful in producing differing strengths of colour ... where required.

... And what about the fact that they are surreal?

There will be some writing on other pages ... and you will find more pertinent words on the picture pages themselves.
